Somerset Short Mat Bowling

Welcome to Short Mat Bowls in Somerset.

Somerset Short Mat Bowls Association was established in 1991 and is registered with the English Short Mat Bowling Association. Its purpose is to promote the game of short mat bowls in our County. Short mat bowls can be played by all ages and is a great way of meeting new friends and learning skills and keeping fit. Played in village halls and sports centres we can help you find your nearest bowls club. Please contact our Secretary Gordon Hughes.

Safeguarding.
Somerset Short Mat Bowls Association are committed to safeguarding all our players in Somerset. We follow policies and procedures and encourage the highest possible standards of care towards children and adults at risk. We work with the English Short Mat Bowls Association and the Bowls

Development Alliance to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

Playing Venues
Somerset SMBA plays across three venues.  All Inter County Practice games and home matches are played at the Wedmore Bowls Club and some practice sessions are played at the Wincanton Memorial Hall.  

Somerset County Squad

Just some of the current squad which now numbers in excess of 40 players .  Each month the County holds a roll up sessions at the Wincanton Memorial Hall and the Wedmore Bowls Club.  Full details are included in the diary available by clicking on the button above.    We only have one County team at the moment but aspire to have two in the future.

Short Mat Bowls in Somerset.
Every Short Mat Bowling Club in Somerset can, if they wish, affiliate to the English Short Mat Bowls Association (ESMBA)and the Somerset Short Mat Bowls Association (SSMBA). This done by registering your club and its members with the SSMBA who then automatically registers the club and members with the ESMBA.  This gives all registered players Personal Accident Cover organised by the ESMBA.  Details of the cover can be found on the ESMBA website.

The personal accident insurance cover is a very good policy and should be considered by all clubs, including those that just play socially, and for all members.

If your club wants to play in leagues organised by the various regions or wants to participate in various tournaments it is best practice to affiliate your club and its players.   Not everyone wants to be involved with the county set up but if your members do it is important that they are registered.

Inter County Competitions (ICC)
Every year the whole of the country is sub divided into various regions.  Somerset is currently in the Premier Division of our region and plays against Devon, Dorset and Cornwall.  Once the regional matches have been completed teams progress to the Knock Out section of the competition and will either play in the Plate or the Main Competition.  This can involve a bit of travel but the experience is well worth the effort.
